every time i die,
i want bells and trumpets
to announce the fact,
and eloquent eulogy delivered
to weeping crowds.

but these huddled mourners
are not available this afternoon,
and there are neither
bells nor trumpets to spare
for my wake.

so, instead,
it is a sparsely attended affair.
i go quietly into the fire
                and am forgotten.
